As bread wheat is the most important cash crops for French organic farmers, the question of the kind of varieties farmers should be using is therefore very important. Most of varieties available were bred for intensive “conventional” farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and pesticides), also screening current varieties for organic conditions becomes a necessity to identifiy suitable varieties for organic farming conditions in a short term experiment. After 20 years of selection and screening combined in two different crop management systems, low inputs and organic, two lines, Hendrix and Skerzzo, have been registered in the official catalogue with the special mention « organic farming ». For the second year of seed production, 150... |

Organic production and also the attention for plant breeding for organic agriculture is still increasing in Europe. The question often raised is how much does plant breeding for the organic sector differ from modern plant breeding and does a ban on GMO also include refraining from molecular marker assisted selection (MAS)? In this paper I will first elaborate on the values in organic agriculture and it related systems approach as a central focus in organic agriculture and will then discuss in which way molecular marker assisted selection can be of use for plant breeding for organic and low-input agriculture. |

Organic farmers must use organic seed material if such seed are available. If not available, conventional seeds can be used. This request exists in all accredited standards for organic farming. In the EU-regulation on organic production methods, the derogation from the use of organic seed material will only exist until the end of 2003. After this date only organic seed material may be used according to the present formulation. Only a few countries in the EU have an organic seed production able to supply the market for organic seed material. It takes many years to develop a well functioning market for organic seeds. It is therefore unlikely that the derogation for the use of organic seed material will not be extended, since a majority of countries in the... |

The report was prepared by the members of the IFOAM-Organics International Working Group on Replacing Cell Fusion Cultivars: Kirsten Arp, Diane Bowen (Chair), Bernd Horneburg, Andre Leu, Rodel Maghirang, John Navazio, Gebhard Rossmanith, Michael Sligh, Yiching Song, and with additional support from Monika Messmer. History of the initiative In 2002 the first IFOAM draft standards were set for organic plant breeding. They stated that only breeding techniques on plant level are compatible for organic principles. This implies that from the process point of view, plant breeding techniques that operate on cell tissue or directly at DNA level violate the integrity of life. Respecting the concept of integrity of life also means that organic agriculture aims to... |
